Thursday nights have some of the most watched TV shows on at the moment. I have not been able to sit down and watch Ugly Betty real time because my husband is flipping through the channels watching Smallville, My name is Earl, and Til Death. He will occasionally stop by on Betty but I make him move on. Why? Because I’ve been catching up with it on ABC.com.
I have watched about 1/2 the episodes available on the Internet and I am hooked. I was/am Betty and I think there are a lot of us out there. We come from varied backgrounds. I believe Betty’s appearance on the show is more on how she thinks she looks in the world of high fashion and how outsiders think her corner of the world looks and the creators exaggerate this. But when you get into the personal side of her life and her aspirations to take her talents to the very top you see she’s just like everyone else. Even Wilhelmina steps off her high-horse to tell Betty to go take care of her family issue after Betty returns a check to her.
I think it’s a great role model for young girls who are smart but not 6 feet tall with high cheekbones and only weigh about 110 lbs. It also shows them how cruel the real world can be and Betty shows them how to stand up to that and be proud of who you are. I wish I had a show like this when I was a young girl. I was too young to understand Mary Tyler Moore and I think I missed That Girl both of which is more of where Ugly Betty should be associated. I did have The Facts of Life but no mattered how hard I tried my mom wouldn’t let me go to a boarding school.
