No! being good in this life is certainly one of the prerequisites for being allowed into heaven to spend eternity with all the other “good” people who have died, basking in the light of God. There are many opinions as to how a person qualifies for a room in heaven. Among them are: “Those who believe in God will go to heaven.”, “If you go to church you will go to heaven”. Many believe a spot will be reserved for them by doing more good than bad here on earth.
So you say, “Well, I’ve never killed anyone or cheated on my spouse or any of those other things in the commandments I heard about in church, so I’ll get to heaven.”. All the various ideas floating around out in our society about what it takes to get there are formed by people who have either never heard the truth as found in the Holy Bible or choose to ignore it in order to continue a just slightly tarnished lifestyle believing they will be able to squeeze through the back door unnoticed having done a lot of good things in their life. After all, God is merciful and will see the difference between them and a “bad” person.
From the Bible comes chapter and verse that dispel any doubt about how much those good works people have done amount to. In the book of Isaiah, Chapter 64:6, the passage reads as follows:
“But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.” (NKJV). The good works (righteousnesses) are nothing to God. They won’t make any difference whatsoever on the place you spend forever when you rely on your good deeds only to get you there.
John 14:6 says: “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.””(NKJV). Now that passage makes it really clear how to get to God the Father and into heaven. It is by believing Jesus went to the cross to atone for our sins. Spilling his blood and being cruelly beaten and tortured so that we would be redeemed and sin free in the sight of Almighty God.
When you die, if you have accepted Jesus Christ, the Son of God as your personal Lord and Savior, heaven will be yours. Revelation 21:4 reveals: “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”(NKJV). Being with God the Father sure beats the alternative as stated in Revelation 21:8: “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
We are given a choice of heaven or hell……choose and choose wisely. Accept Jesus Christ and pray that he comes into your heart, ask him to forgive your sins so that you may be seen by the Father as acceptable to spend eternity with him. Then your good works will be seen as treasures stored up in heaven for you.
