Godliness is a virtue required of every Christian, whether male or female. There are many women in the Bible that modelled a life of godliness, and they will be considered here. Below are some of the qualities of a godly woman.
*Humility – A godly woman has a demeanour of meekness in all outward and inward dispositions. Sarah was very humble to the extent that she called her husband Abraham “Lord.” God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. That is why the pride of Saul’s daughter Michal left her as the only woman in the scripture that was barren for life. She despised her husband David, who was God’s anointed king over Israel. (2 Samuel 6)
*Discernment – A devout woman has the grace of discernment because she is in step with the spirit of God every day of her life. She hears the voice of the Spirit and carries out the instruction to the letter. Jael in the Bible comes to mind readily when the issue of a discerning woman comes into play. She was able to realise that God had given the victory to Israel by directing Sisera to her tent. She tapped into the frequency of heaven and nailed the man down. (Judges 4:17-22)
*Reverence for God – The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, which is what is exemplified in the life of a Godly woman. Great women whose stories were told in the scriptures feared God, and that was evidenced in their decisions in life. Abigail knew that God’s anointing was upon the life of David; she did not follow the folly of her husband but appreciated the agenda of God for Israel by honouring David. Ruth the Moabite found herself in the field of Boaz because she was ready to do the will of God.
*Fitting speech – Godly women know what to say and how to say it. Pro 31:26: “When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly.” This verse actually summarises the way women in the Bible spoke with people in their world.
*Thankfulness – The Bible says in all things to give thanks, godly women are biblical in all their approaches to issues of life. When Deborah came back from the battle she sang to the Lord. Miriam, Moses’ sister, did the same thing in Exodus.
*Purity – A godly woman is pure in all her ways because she has the passion to please God in all she does. They keep themselves clean from all appearances of evil.
*Gorgeousness – Godly women are pretty inside and outside. Their inward beauty actually radiates on the outside. Pro 31:25: “Her clothes are well-made and elegant, and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.” (Message Bible)
*Fearlessness – Godly women are courageous because they know that greater is he that is in them than he that is the world. Deborah and Jael in the book of Judges are classic examples of women who exhibited bravery.
*Kindness – The woman described in Proverbs 31 is a classic example of a kind woman. Pro 31:20: She’s quick to assist anyone in need, reaches out to help the poor (Message Bible). Ruth was very kind to her mother-in-law. Abigail was kind to David.
There are many other qualities of a godly woman as explained and exemplified in the scriptures. 21st century Christian women should learn from these examples in the scriptures to order their lives.
