Lying and the Bible – Yes

Using the Bible for swearing-in ceremonies and in courtrooms is, in my opinion, the only reliable tool for establishing honesty, because swearing to God to establish a lie comes with severe and eternal penalties.

Some people might lie with their hand on the Bible, claiming later that they did not believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or even His Son, Jesus Christ, but denying the existence of gravity does nothing to nullify its existence. If you don’t believe me, try denying that law (it is a law) by jumping off a cliff. The person that would discount God and use His word, (which God has said He has exalted above His own name) is more than totally stupid and foolhardy. It is absolutely insane!

Here’s a verse of scripture that you should very seriously consider before lying using God’s Word as a tool to do so: Matthew 10:28, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Here’s another one in the book of Revelation 21:8 – “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death.” “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God!” (That’s another quote from Hebrews 10:31.)

Actually, it would be a lot safer to use some other method if you want to lie. But I wouldn’t count on it. In the same context, I would also point out that the Word of God (another name for the Bible) is a living book. It is “God breathed.” If you recall in the book of Genesis, God fashioned Adam from the garden soil of Eden as a sculptor would using His own hands, and then He “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (lives, actually in the Hebrew), and man became a living soul.” Just as a point of interest here, please note that Adam did NOT become a living body! In the same way,

God has brought the Bible to life. It is, in fact a living thing and not just an ordinary book. Here’s the verse of scripture on which I base this wonderful truth. (Another name for the Bible is the Word of Truth – John 17:17) Hebrews 4:10 – “For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of the soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a critic of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Think about that!
