How do we know that God loves us? This question is very fundamental and is the basis for faith in God. Many times we hear the verse “…God is love” (1 John 4:8). We hear it so many times to the point that it becomes a cliché and its empowering deep meaning is lost. This sometimes leads us to think, “How do we know that God loves us? Yes, He is God and He created us, but does He really love us or is He just playing with us?” Every Christian must ask himself this question at the beginning to build his faith on a solid foundation.
We make many mistakes and disobey His commandments many times, yet we aren’t stricken off the face of the earth. Imagine yourself as God for a moment. You decide to make a whole world and put people in it. Then those people, like many in today’s society, decide to do wicked things such as steal and hurt others. What would most of us do if we were God? Well, we would surely make sure that that person either no longer exists or is in so much pain he wishes he was dead.
Now that we know what we would do, let’s compare that to the God we know and respect. God doesn’t do this with us. As a matter of fact, He tells us that when He forgives He forgets. So not only is He lenient with us, He even goes as far as telling us that if we admit we were wrong He just and able to forgive us. He went through great pains to save us, even to the point where He had to hang from a tree with nails in his hands and feet while wearing a crown of thorns that pierced into His skull for three hours only to be stabbed in the side with a spear. All of this torture and agony was done in order to save us. How much greater can such a love be?
The most important part of knowing God’s love that will be discussed in this paragraph is more important than the principles that were declared in the previous paragraph. To truly know God’s love we must seek Him. He says “Ask and you will receive, Seek and you will find, knock and the door shall be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7). We must seek God and read the Bible and honestly be wanting to know about Him. We all have our down times emotionally and this leads us to wonder if God really does love us.
In my journey to find an answer for this question many doors were opened and many of my questions were answered simply because God reveals Himself to those who diligently seek Him. I was just coming back from the hospital and I was in pain. While in my agony and anguish I told God that I really want to be with Him, but it’s really hard to do so when I feel like You don’t love me by putting me in this pain. I was also upset with Him because I was getting fed up with believing in Him yet I never see Him or have any evidence that He is existing. I then noticed that since I was not interested in wasting my time on TV anymore and I wasn’t able to focus on the monitor of my computer anymore that I began to seek more of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (God).
The next morning I woke up and turned on the television and found that a show called “Evidence” was recorded at 3 A.M. This show was about evidence that God exists and how He loves us all. This is definitely not a coincidence. First of all, I was never up at 3 A.M. to tell the DVR to record the show, nor have I ever seen the show before, nor have I ever known that the channel had ever existed. I was in tears because the day before I asked God to please show me some mercy and show me evidence He loves me. So instead of giving up on me because I am so stubborn He decided to do this little kind gesture to nudge me back on track. It was little to Him, but it went a long way for me because it really showed me how much he cared about me even though I am not important at all in a world of 7 billion people. He cares about each and every one of us.
God does many things for us throughout the day, but sometimes we don’t notice. Everything is for a reason and our Father loves us so much, but in order for us to truly feel His infinite love we ourselves need to get closer to Him. A good exercise which helps you do this is prayer. When I say prayer, I don’t mean it in the universally assumed version of prayer in which an individual will recite a certain arrangement of cool sounding words. No, instead you should talk to God as if He was a person sitting right next to you. Talk to Him, He is listening and willing to do anything for you as long as you are willing to devote your life to Him. If you want God to talk to you then combine these conversations you have with Him and read the Bible because these are the living words of God. I recommend you start with the Gospels which are the first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They will lead you in the right direction to start your journey with God.
I will keep you in my prayers. May God manifest His love to you and keep you safe in all that you do. Amen.
