Gods Call Obedience Skills Spiritual Gifts

“for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” Romans 11:29 NIV

I belong to a few Christian online groups on a site called Black Planet, in one of these groups a sister in Christ asked basically if God gives us the tools we need to do his will, then why is it so hard? She also admitted that she most often is just doing it out of obedience. I had to stop and think on this one because a question came to my mind; Is what she is doing really what God’s Holy Spirit has called her to do or is she doing what man is telling her is God’s Will? I also wondered if she is confusing God’s will for her life with obeying God’s commands?

When God calls us to perform according to his will he gives us the tools or skills to perform them. We are inherently gifted at the things we like to do. I for one am inherently gifted with artistic skills, ranging from media arts to lyrical. God has used this to have me serve others with creating eye-catching presentations, writing poetry for programs, etc. I have always loved using my artistic skills from a toddler not being able to stay within the lines to an adult who can create texture by crushing pastel chalk into powder. Then there are gifts that are inherent to us but we do not discover them until later in life. I used to think that my fascination with taking things apart and putting them together again was just that, a fascination. However, I realized as an adult, that I was born with an analytic mindset that can be applied to a variety of situations and fields.

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:6-8 NIV

Then for some we may be gifted beyond what we were born with. These gifts usually come upon us as we are maturing in our faith. These gifts are spiritual gifts and they are, to paraphrase 1 Corinthians 12:7, evidence of the Holy Spirit working through each individual for the common good. These gifts such as, knowledge and wisdom that comes from Spirit, the gift of healing, spiritual discernment, etc.

“To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives then to each one, just as he determines.” 1 Corinthians 12:8-11

What these scriptures advise me and have been proven true in my own life is that we are given gifts we are born with and gifts the Spirit decides to lay upon us as we grow in Christ. These gifts are to be used for the will of God. Some may say not all are called, but we all are called to do something for the Kingdom, for as 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 (NIV) states:

“Now you are the body of Christ, and one of you is a part of it. And in the church of God has appointed first of all the apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts”

Now if we are in a position or are asked to doing something that does not fall in line with what we are skilled at, then more than likely we may need to start knocking on heaven’s door in a quiet spot on your knees asking for God to show us they way. If we are answering the call that God spoke directly to our spirit and we are having issues with wanting to see it through, then again I say knock on heaven’s door and ask God to hold up the mirror so we may see your reflection. I say this because maybe we need to do some self examination to get ourselves in check and find our love again.

I also feel when it comes to the place we congregate for worship and where we work, we still need to take it to God in prayer for direction and get in His Word, for His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). Sometimes we have to remain and press on where we are at until God reveals where we are to be and sends us there. If we rely on our own selves for things like a church to fellowship at and a job, we may not make the right decision. This is why we have to take everything to the LORD in prayer. For if we delight ourselves in the LORD He will give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4)

Now there are some things we just have to do out of obedience like love one another, showing kindness, turning the other cheek, etc. Obedience is not for our pleasure, however the positive side of obedience is what Psalm 37:4 speaks of, what 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 states, and what Romans 12:6-8 speak of. We will be able to use the gifts we inherently have, be given additional gifts from the Spirit, and we will delight in using them in answer to God’s calling or will for our lives.

For if your calling is from God and not man, remember this:
