Dirty Dancing Remake is Announced

Back in 1987 when hair was big and trends were flashy, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze lit up the big screen with a movie that became an instant hit and still remains popular to date. The movie can still routinely be viewed on many cable and movie networks. Over the years the movie has developed a loyal fan base and has likely picked up a new generation of fans along the way.

This week it was announced that a remake of ‘Dirty Dancing’ is in the works.

E! Online reported “No doubt the studio Lionsgate is taking its cue from wildly successful television shows like ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Dancing With the Stars’, along with the remake of that other fan-fave dancing flick ‘Footloose’ “.

The original movie’s choreographer, Kenny Ortega, will be working on the new movie.

About the remake, E! Online reported Jennifer Grey said “I’m so excited about this news, and I think there’s nobody better to do this than my beloved Kenny Ortega, who is as responsible as anyone for the success of the first one,” she added, “I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with it.”

While Grey is excited about the potentials (maybe she can do a cameo or have a supporting role?), many fans of the show may not be so willing to embrace the new movie.

By the looks of it, ‘Dirty Dancing’ is essentially retelling the same story, placing the story in the same era, using the same exact characters. While movie news has been announced, with no time frame indicated for the release of the flick, there has been no mention of whether or not the same soundtrack will be used. Although CNN reported that 60s songs are planned to be included.

According to MSNBC, “After the studio announced the news Monday that Kenny Ortega would be directed the film, many took to Twitter to express their outrage.

The Washington Post posted a poll on Aug. 8, and as of Aug. 10, 86 percent of voters said “The worst idea I’ve ever heard. My dance space has officially been invaded.” Six percent thought a reboot of ‘Dirty Dancing’ was a great idea.

With a loyal fan base, this one has a high possibility to be a miss. Often fans like to see their favorite and classic movies left alone.

Despite the fact that Baby wasn’t put in the corner in the movie, perhaps ‘Dirty Dancing’ should have been left aside to age gracefully and intact. However it will be hard to say until the new movie is released whether or not any new magic can be made with the classic story.
