While most Christmas films are geared towards a younger audience, there are some that really cater towards the romantic at heart. Christmas is the season for spending quality time with friends and family but can also be a very romantic time of year. Whether it’s the ice skating, twinkling lights or the mistletoe; it seems like there are many opportunities for a romantic moment during the Christmas season. Check out a few Christmas-themed movies that cater towards romantics and see a film that isn’t just cartoons or dogs wearing Santa hats.
Starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, “Four Christmases” tells the story of a couple determined to remain unmarried without any children. While it seems like they have a great relationship, the two have such a fear of marriage due to both having come from divorced parents. In an effort to stay away from their dysfunctional families during Christmas, the couple gives an excuse to go on vacation instead of visiting all four homes for Christmas. However, when a flight delay causes the couple to have visit their families, comedy and romance ensues.
“It’s A Wonderful Life”
This classic film released in 1946, “It’s A Wonderful Life” is more than just a story about a man who thinks life would be better if he had never been born. In fact, the main story revolves around the love between a husband and wife that stems from a crush in their childhood. Not only does their love endure, but it shows that true romance can come, even with a broken down house and no money.
This British film depicts a number of love storylines, from the single guy traveling to America in hopes of meeting a girl to an old man realizing his friendship with his longtime manager means more to him than all the celebrity in the world. “Love Actually” stars Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and a number of other well-known actors and actresses. This is a heartwarming movie that centers around the holiday season and how “All you need is love.”
Released in 2006, “The Holiday” stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black. The story revolves around two women living across the pond from one another, who share similar troubles regarding their love lives. They decide to swap homes with each other to get a change of scenery during the holiday season and find love a world away from home.
“While You Were Sleeping”
Released in 1995, “While You Were Sleeping” stars Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. Sandra plays a Chicago Transit Authority token collector that helps to save the life of a man she doesn’t know. However, she feels a connection to the man and ultimately pretends to be his fiancée when the man is in a coma. She becomes “in love” with the man’s family during the visits to the hospital and it seems she has been able to bring the family closer together. Things get complicated when the man’s younger brother becomes suspicious and then falls in love with her. This romantic comedy has an interesting twist once the man wakes from the coma and doesn’t know her as his fiancée.
While many Christmas films can generally be geared towards children, there are many others that are great for adults. Take advantage of some of the romanticism of the holiday season and watch some Christmas films that will warm the heart and bring back the romance.
