Nicholas Sparks is a talented author whose books mainly focus on romance. Seven of his novels have been adapted to film, but the best include A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, and Dear John.
A Walk to Remember
Nicholas Sparks wrote A Walk to Remember in honor of his sister, Danielle Sparks Lewis who died with cancer in 2000. It was the second of his novels to be adapted to film. The film adaption of the same name was released in 2002. Shane West and Mandy Moore starred as the primary characters in the film. Unlike the novel that is set in the 1950s, the film takes place in modern times.
This touching love story revolves around shy and religious girl, Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) and popular and rebellious boy, Landon Carter (Shane West). Jamie and Landon have known each other for several years, but they do not speak to each other because of their differing social statuses. However, Landon’s involvement in a prank gone wrong leads to him being forced to participate in after-school activities.
After joining the drama club, Landon has to interact with Jamie who helps him practice his lines for a play. As they spend time together, Jamie and Landon fall in love with each other. Then, Jamie reveals to Landon that she has terminal leukemia. Landon stays by Jamie’s side as her condition worsens. Jamie and Landon get married before her death. Thanks to Jamie, Landon changes his life and becomes a better person.
The Notebook was the first novel that Sparks’ published. The best-selling novel eventually became a movie and hit the big screen in 2004 featuring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The film occasionally switches time periods from modern day to the 1940s.
The romantic drama begins in 1940 at a carnival in South Carolina when Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sets his sights on Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams). At first, Allie resists Noah’s advances, but she eventually gives into him which leads to a lifelong romance filled with love and angst. Throughout the film, an elderly version of Noah is telling an older Allie, who is now riddled with Alzheimer’s disease, their love story.
The novel, Dear John was released in 2006. Four years later, the film adaption of the novel came around the world. The film stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as the main characters.
Dear John centers on college student, Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) and Army Sergeant, John Tyree (Channing Tatum) who meet in North Carolina. They fall in love within two weeks after meeting. However, John goes back to war and continues his romance with Savannah through letters which lasts over the course of two years. Eventually, Savannah informs John in a letter that she is engaged to another man. John decides to re-enlist in the army and spends four more years fighting.
While waiting to be deployed, John learns that his father had a stroke and returns home. After his father’s death, John visits Savannah and realizes that she has married her neighbor, Tim, who is battling cancer. John leaves again, but he sells his father’s coin collection to donate to Tim for cancer treatment. John later learns that Tim died of cancer through a letter from Savannah. At the end of the film, John seems to be finished with the army and spots Savannah in a coffee shop. The film closes with Savannah and John sharing a hug.
