Angels as we know them are messengers of God and are not to be worshipped. The greatest and most beautiful angel of them all was Lucifer and we know what happened to him. The bible tells us that Lucifer, the “Son of the Morning” was in the beginning the head angel who decided he wanted to be God, as scripture tells us,”How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly on the heights of Zaphon; I will ascend to the tops of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:12-14, NIV). So it was Lucifer’s desire to be God that caused war in the heavens. Which continues until this day, we have conflict in the world, for there are angels among us?
The first commandment tells us that we should have no other gods before Him. That is inclusive of angels. Maybe if we understood the role or function of angels, we would not want to worship them but admire them. After all, it’s been told that angels are jealous of mankind because we have free will and can be forgiven. If they mess up they are rejected, kicked out of heaven. So lets take a look at who some of these angels are.
Those that we see named in the bible are, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. These are the 3 most talked about and referenced angels that we know of. Angels are beautiful creatures created by God to do His bidding. For instance, Gabriel appears in the Old Testament book of Daniel to the prophet Daniel in order to explain God’s message given to Daniel and again in the gospel book of Luke to announce the birth of John the Baptist.
Next we have Michael, an archangel. We see him in Jude, chapter 9 as “the chief angel” and in Revelation leading the other angels in battle against the dragon and his angels. We also see him in the book of Daniel as “Israel’s guardian angel”. To read about Raphael you will need a Catholic or Jewish bible. He is represented in the book of Torbit. In this book, Raphael is dispatched from heaven, sent by God, in answer to the prayers of blind Torbit and to give relief to a young woman where an evil spirit keeps killing her husbands. A black widow if you will. So not only are angels sent as messengers but as delivers or protectors from evil.
Now, hopefuly, you have a better understanding of angels and the roles they play. And hopefully, you understand that if you create an idol out of anything, you are creating a demigod which is in violation to the one and only true God. So wear your angel earrings and necklaces, hang your pictures and show off your angel statues, but remember, that we serve a jealous God so don’t let these things become idol worship. For God has said, that He is the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Our Egypt today is our struggle to be free.
